Devotional: Build the Altar Before the Platform

Scripture: Genesis 12:7 (NIV)

“So he built an altar there to the Lord, who had appeared to him.”

Devotional:
I’ll be the first to admit this: there are moments when I’ve gotten so focused on what I’m building that I forgot Who I was building it with. The dream, the purpose, the platform—it can subtly become a project, and before I know it, I’m working for God without pausing to be with Him.

When God appeared to Abram, the first thing he did wasn’t to grab his plans. He didn’t pitch a tent or start strategizing. He built an altar.

Before Abraham became the father of many nations, he became a worshiper.
Before he ever gained land, influence, or legacy—he built altars.
And I wonder… are we still building altars? Or are we rushing to build platforms?

In a world where visibility is currency, it’s easy to get caught up in the metrics—followers, sales, likes, stages. But none of that matters if your private worship doesn’t outweigh your public presentation.

The altar is where the oil flows. The altar is where God meets you. The altar was a place of remembrance, of reverence, of surrender. And in today’s world, it looks like something less flashy—less Instagrammable—but far more powerful.

It’s where your heart gets checked before your mic gets turned on.

Ministry without an altar becomes a performance. Influence without intimacy becomes idolatry. So before you launch the thing, post the reel, or go live—pause and build the altar.

Because if God’s not the one you're meeting with in the quiet, it’s only a matter of time before the noise consumes you.

What does altar-building look like in real life?

  • Waking up early not to scroll, but to sit quietly before God—no agenda, just presence.

  • Shutting down your laptop when God nudges you to pray, even when deadlines scream louder.

  • Fasting from platforms that tempt you to compare or compete.

  • Journaling your prayers before planning your content.

  • Surrendering your launch date, your strategy, or your followers back to God—even if it means slowing down.

If I’m honest, I’ve had to repent for moments I prioritized results over reverence. I don’t want to build anything that didn’t start at His altar. I’m learning—again—that worship must be the foundation, not just a warm-up.

Reflection Questions:

  • What is one specific way I can build an altar in my daily rhythm?

  • Am I trying to rush into visibility without first pausing in humility?

  • Where have I prioritized productivity over intimacy?

Prayer:
Lord, forgive me for the times I’ve run ahead without You.
Help me to build the altar before I build the platform.
Teach me how to sit with You, hear from You, and surrender my work back to You. Let everything I build flow from a place of worship, not performance.
Make my private time with You more important than any public result.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Be Blessed!
