Formation Before Fruit

“Those who are planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God.”
— Psalm 92:13 (NIV)

We often rush into a new year asking, “What will I produce?”
But God often begins by asking, “What must be formed?”

Last year didn’t just pass—it revealed.

It exposed patterns, pauses, resistance, and responses we didn’t always want to see.

Not to shame you.
Not to discourage you.
But to invite you deeper.

Many women try to correct behavior without ever examining formation.

We set goals, write plans, declare scripture—yet still feel the weight of hesitation, inconsistency, or minimal fruit.

That’s because fruit is not produced by effort alone.
Fruit flows from what has been shaped beneath the surface.

You can love God sincerely and still be building from places that were never meant to lead you.

You can be called and still cautious.
Gifted and still guarded.
Obedient—but internally resistant in ways you haven’t named yet.

This year doesn’t begin with striving.

It begins with understanding.

Understanding what last year uncovered about how you trust.
How you wait.
How you respond when God is silent.
How you move when He speaks clearly.

Before you ask this year to give you fruit, allow God to continue His work of formation. Because what He forms, He sustains.
And what He sustains, will flourish in its time.

Reflection Questions

  1. What patterns did last year expose in me that I can no longer ignore? Where did obedience feel heavier than it should have—and why? What might God be shaping in me before He releases more through me?

Prayer
Father, help me not rush past the work You are doing within me.
Give me clarity, not condemnation. Understanding, not pressure.
Shape me where I’ve been unaware and strengthen me where I’ve grown weary.

I trust Your formation process, knowing it prepares me for fruit that lasts.

Amen.
