Isaac or Ishmael? When Good Dreams Are Built the Wrong Way

There’s a dream many of us carry quietly.

Not the one we talk about often—but the one we keep returning to.
The one we push for. Fight for. Try to make happen.

But Scripture invites us to ask a deeper question:
Is this dream an Isaac… or an Ishmael?

Ishmael was born from human effort.
From impatience.
From a desire to help God fulfill His promise.

Isaac, on the other hand, was born from trust.
From surrender.
From waiting on what only God could do.

And here’s the uncomfortable truth:
Not every dream we’re chasing is wrong—but some are being built the wrong way.

Sometimes we take a God-given promise and try to carry it with human strength.

We strive for validation.
We push for visibility.
We chase affirmation, applause, numbers, and recognition—believing those things will confirm that we’re on the right path.

But God never asked us to strive for what He already promised.

There are seasons when obedience looks like effort.
And there are seasons when obedience looks like rest.

Sometimes God isn’t asking for more hustle.
He’s asking us to stop forcing what was meant to flow.

Your assignment is faith.
Your responsibility is obedience.
Your posture is trust.

What God births by the Spirit, He sustains by the Spirit.

Ask yourself:

  • Where am I striving instead of trusting?

  • What am I trying to control that God asked me to surrender?

  • Is this season calling for obedience through action—or obedience through rest?

My sister if God promised it, you don’t have to force it.
Let Him birth it. Let Him grow it. Let Him sustain it.

Be Blessed
